The San Francisco 49ers have officially signed wide receiver Robbie Chosen to a one-year contract, adding the experienced player to their roster. Chosen, who entered the NFL in 2016 as an undrafted free agent with the New York Jets, has had a diverse career spanning eight years.
Over the years, he has played for several teams, including the Jets (2016-2019), the Carolina Panthers (2020-22), the Arizona Cardinals (2022), and most recently, the Miami Dolphins in 2023.
During his tenure with the Dolphins last season, Chosen appeared in nine games, recording four receptions for 126 yards and one touchdown.
Although his stats from last year may seem modest, the 49ers are hopeful that Chosen can still contribute significantly by making some big plays in the upcoming 2024 season.
At 31 years old, Chosen may no longer be in his prime, but his speed could still be an asset for the 49ers. If he can stretch the field effectively, it could open up opportunities for the team’s other offensive weapons, adding another layer to their attack.
To make room for Chosen on the roster, the 49ers made the corresponding move of waiving/injuring wide receiver Frank Darby.
Darby, who had joined the team on July 27, played 34 snaps in the first preseason game, including five on special teams.
Despite catching one of his two targets for 33 yards and forcing a missed tackle, Darby struggled to make a significant impact, particularly due to a lack of speed that limited his effectiveness both on special teams and in the offense.
