On Thursday, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced that defenseman Marshall Rifai, who made his NHL debut last season, has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2026-27 season. The extension is valued at an annual average of $775,000.
Rifai, who is 26 years old, had a brief but notable stint with the Maple Leafs last February, participating in two NHL games. During these appearances, he averaged 11 minutes and 40 seconds of ice time per game, showcasing his potential and readiness for higher competition.
In addition to his NHL appearances, Rifai had a strong performance with the Toronto Marlies, the Maple Leafs’ affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). Over the course of 57 games with the Marlies last season, Rifai accumulated 19 points, including two goals and 17 assists. His contributions were also significant in the playoffs, where he scored three goals and added an assist in just three games.
Throughout his time with the Marlies, Rifai has demonstrated consistent offensive capabilities. In 126 regular-season AHL games, he has earned a total of 35 points, consisting of six goals and 29 assists. His playoff performances have also been impressive, with five points (three goals and two assists) in eight games. This track record highlights his effectiveness both in regular-season play and crucial playoff situations.
Rifai initially joined the Maple Leafs organization in March 2022, signing a one-year contract with the Marlies. Since then, he has steadily developed his skills and proven his value as a defenseman, leading to his recent contract extension with the NHL team.
